Mardan LitFest 2019

Project Brief:

First of its kind ever in Mardan, the Literary Festival (LitFest) was an effort to inform, educate and involve the local population in discussions and activities that promoted the local literature, mainstreamed artistic expressions, and connected the them with folk performances. Literature, artistic expression and folk performances have been the first targets of the Taliban violence across KP and (erstwhile) FATA, and that had also hit the Mardan district.

The project mobilized local support and created a sense of the ownership of the loss that the social fabric has been experiencing for the last two decades because of the oppression that a violent environment had perpetrated.

Mardan LitFest engaged academia and the university youth to lead the processes, and as the project progressed, it involved leaders from other segments of the society also such as: literati, public intellectuals, journalists, thought leaders, religious scholars, historians, minorities, performers et al. There was a series of number of smaller events, that culminated in a larger celebration of the local literature, artistic expressions and performances of the folk traditions.

The communities came together, and made it a success story!

Timeframe: January – October 2019.
